Processed Foods = Bad?

Over the past few years processed foods have been given a bad reputation. This is with good cause, but are all processed foods bad? Actually, no.

There are two kinds of processed foods: (1) industrial, and (2) traditional. Industrial processing is pretty recent but traditional processing has been going on for thousands of years.

Industrial = Bad

but,

Traditional = Good

Examples:

- Industrial -

Whole Wheat Flour

processed into:

Refined/Enriched White Flour
(via)
Result:

No flavor, fiber, or B vitamins

I could show many more examples of industrially processed foods, but they are simply the common ones that are getting attacked right now: canned goods etc.

But what about the foods that have been processed for thousands of years?

While industrial processing diminishes nutrition and flavor, traditional processing actually enhances both.

- Examples -

(My favorite first)

Milk
(via)
processed into:

Yogurt
(via)
Result:

Healthy bacteria

- - -

Cabbage
(via)
processed into:

Sauerkraut
(via)
Result:

More vitamin C, enzymes, and good bacteria

- - -

Also, cold pressed Olive Oil keeps its vitamin E and antioxidants

Carefully choose your processed foods. :-)
